Tuesday, December 13, 2011

1. Open your All About Me PowerPoint project.

2. Add one more section to your presentation. It's probably a good idea to make a Section Header slide for this section if you have done so for all of the other sections. (Be consistent!) You may choose the topic of this section. Some ideas include:
• My Family
• My Future Plans (What you want to be when you grow up, or where you want to go to college)
• My Hobbies (Things you do in your spare time)

3. Review your presentation to make sure that you have included all of the required elements. Make any last minute changes that you need to. Check each element off on your check list when you are finished.

4. When it is complete, please show me your presentation and I will sign it off. This project is due no later than Thursday (the last day of school before break).

5. Work in Khan Academy. Please finish any assigned exercises that you you have not yet mastered.

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Thursday, December 1, 2011

**Before you begin, please listen carefully (hands and eyes) to Mrs. Delatore's demonstration until you are excused to work on your own. P.S. This is a test to see if you can read and follow directions.

1. Open up your All About Me Power Point Project. If it is not saved in your folder on the desktop, then you did not save it correctly. Please pay close attention and follow directions carefully.

2. Today we are adding a new section to our project that is dedicated to your favorite things. Insert a new slide. Choose the layout called "Section Header." Give your section a title and, if you want, give it a subtitle.

3. Insert another new slide. This one is going to be for the content, so choose the layout called "Title and Content." Keep the same title that you used for your section title, and then fill in the content space with at least 4 of your favorite things. Feel free to add another slide if you need more space. You might include some of these favorites or think of some of your own:
• Book
• Movie
• Song
• Color
• Number
• Season
• Month
• Animal
• Sport
• Sports team
• College
• Military branch
• Subject (in school)
• Writer
• Actor
• Musician
• Holiday
• Theme park
• Place (to visit or go on vacation)
• Food
• Restaurant
• Quote
• State
• Country

4. Add a transition to one (or all) of your slides. Remember, don't get crazy. Wild transitions should be used in sparingly. (That means don't use them a lot and save them for just the right time.) They can distract from your presentation. If you want to have a transition on every slide, choose one that is more subtle.

5. Save your work: File > Save (if it has already been saved in the correct location)

6. Khan Academy: Please make sure your assigned exercises are passed off before going on to anything else.

3. On the title slide, type your name for the title and "All About Me" for the subtitle.

4. Under the Home tab in the Slides section click New Slide. Choose the slide "Section Header."

5. This section will be for your personal history. Give it a title and subtitle to represent this topic.

6. New Slide: Title and content

7. Fill in a title (it can be a repeat of the title you already made for this section) and at least 3 bullet points describing your history. For example
• Where were you born? When?
• Where have you lived?

• Is there a big event in your life that has made an impact on you? What is it and when did it take place?

8. When you finish these steps, you may go to Khan Academy and continue working on your assigned exercises.

They will do this by by analyzing their mistakes on quizzes and tests and by working on exercises in the KhanAcademy math program (see below).

About This Blog
This is the first place students go when they come in the computer lab. Here they can find a post giving them their directions for the period as well as links to other websites that we use frequently. You can find our class links in the column on the right side of this page. This page is constantly changing and so are the links! I will be adding and deleting links and other information as necessary so check back often!

Important Websites
I would like you to be aware of two important websites that your children are expected to use frequently.
• PowerSchool

PowerSchool
This is where students can log in to view their grades including all assignments that their teachers have entered in the grade book. If you would like to log in to your child's account and view their grades, please take the following steps.

1. Go to the PowerSchool login page by clicking on the link above or in the list of links on the right.

2. Enter their User Name and Password.
• User Name: School ID number (see me if you need this)
• Password: Date of birth without any 0s as placeholders (June 1, 2000 = 612000)

KhanAcademy
This is where students can go to work on practice math problems and have access to thousands of instructional videos. These videos cover every math topic that your children need to master this year. The best thing about this program is that students are able to log in so that the program will record their progress. They can then add 'coaches' who are able to view their progress at any time and see their work from any given day.

If you would like access to your child's progress along with all of the available data, please take the following steps.

1. Log in to KhanAcademy yourself (you may do so with either a Google or Facebook account).

2. Have your child add you as their coach (they should know how to do this, but if not there are directions on your account once you log in to KhanAcademy).

I encourage all parents to start their own KhanAcademy account! If you do, you will be able to:
• View your child's progress
• Compete with your child by earning your own points and badges as you pass off your own exercises
• Brush up on old skills to be able to answer your child's math questions at home
• Learn something new (there is more than just math!)

1. Dance Mat Typing: Level 4 Stage 10

2. It's time to set goals for Khan Academy! Please read through the page above called Email Format.

3. Email me your Khan Academy goal for the week using the proper email format. Some appropriate goals could be:

  • This week, I will pass off <name exercises> by <tell how you will make sure to pass off these exercises>.
  • This week, I will work for <number> minutes by <tell when and where you will work to make sure to reach your goal>.
  • This week, I will earn <name badges> by <tell specifically how you will earn these badges>.
4. Work for the rest of the period in Khan Academy toward your goal for the week. If you are able to reach your goal by the end of the period, then your goal is not challenging enough!
